By learning this way, we can escape the exorbitant costs of an (American) university education. While some of his ideas had some resonance for me, I often thought that his view of what is education was too limited (it's about getting a job) and that his examples were mostly USA-centric.
 <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:

Out of the 400 delegates at the conference, probably at least 200 were people who are active in the Society and already known to each other.
 <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:3.75pt;text-align:justify;text-justify:

"Yes I do", "No you don't", then ensued in a typical dad/son exchange. Eventually I said "You know that I've got a phone", and pulled it from my pocket and waved it in front of him. "But that's not a phone, Dad", he said with seriousness and a hint of puzzlement on his face. Trying not to sound too exasperated, I said, "Of course it's a phone! What do you think it is?" The reply came back, with some disdain in his voice, "That's not a phone Dad, that's the Internet!". I was beaten - Son 1, Dad 0 again!

This highlights for me the role of past learning and perceptions in our understanding of the present. That’s not a bad thing in itself, unless it limits our thinking about how we operate in the present and the potential for the future. While I used "the phone" to access the Internet all the time (probably 95% or more) I still perceived it as a phone. In fact, in a device that easily fits in a pocket, I had access to trillions of pages of information. While we shouldn't lose sight of the past, we sometimes have to consider how new technologies allow us to do new things, rather than do old things in slightly different ways. My digital literacy increased that day, not through learning a new vocabulary but through conceptual change, perhaps like learning how a Haiku or sonnet is constructed.

What experiences have you had that have made you more aware of the role of digital technologies in your life?

[Image courtesy of Leigh Blackall and a Creative Commons licence]

ADDITION - This evening, while reading a blog post about social networks, I was pointed to this video by Alex Samuel. She describes what the Internet means to her and in the process nails digital literacy. She describes a key aspect that both Colin Lankshear and Doug Belshaw talk about in their contributions to Digital Literacy Awareness Week, that digital literacy is about people doing things that have context for them and communicating meaning and learning in social ways. The Internet is what we make of it - by understanding this we take a giant step towards the condition that is digital literacy.

Digital literacy is as important as reading and writing so it is no coincidence that we have chosen the same week that hosts International Literacy Day

. Keep in mind that digital literacy isn’t a threshold, it is a continuum that we never get to the end of. While it’s not so important where you are on that journey, the important thing is to engage, as there is always something more to know. Even if you are not interested for yourself, students within early childhood, primary and secondary education are being groomed for technological engagement as outlined in the NZ Digital Strategy 2008. It is vital for our future society that this engagement continues to be nurtured and enhanced within tertiary environments by staff who are confident themselves with digital technology.

Luckily for us we work in a learning organisation, and we understand the need to support our staff in continually learning & developing our practice. In light of a rapidly changing technological environment and its impact on workplace practices, development of digital literacy has particular significance. So we are bringing you Digital Literacy week. Look out for posters and flyers in your tearooms and I hope you can all participate and I’m sure that you will have some fun along the way!

Recently the University has experienced a phishing attack, so it seemed like a good time to write about netsafety. Dishonesty isn't something new, we all know it exists. The thing that is new is the environment where we are facing dishonesty. Thinking about it, it really isn't that surprising there are those who are trying to rip you off online. People can be dishonest and people use technology to help them be dishonest. Guess the trick is to ensure you protect yourself as much as possible and acquire the skills to recognise dishonesty when it presents itself. It actually isn't that difficult to be safe online there are some really obvious measures you can take. Mostly they are the same things you would do in a face to face situation.

Then I joined Lindy Klein (Australia) who presented a paper about how system administrators can influence learning. This might sound like an odd connection but Moodle site reporting can help determine which staff can be potential champions.

Back to back sessions from Gavin Henrick (Ireland) followed then another recording before bed. Gavin wowed the audience with how an IMS LTI is a standard way of integrating applications with learning platforms in his Keynote: Breaking Down the Barriers to Learning Technology - Moodle as Part of the Learning Ecosystem. Read more about the potential of this fantastic standard on Gavin’s blog. Incidentally check out ChemVantage who provide Open Education Resources for teaching and learning General Chemistry and Noteflight which is an online music writing app that lets you create, view, print and hear music. Gavin’s second session highlighted the importance of evaluating Moodle Plugins with a list of some he feels are essential. He also reminded me of the Plugin Evaluation checklist he published which is collecting dust in my Moodle Development folder :)

The alarm was set early for Wednesday morning so I could get up and watch the session about BigBlueButton from Fred Dixon (Canada). I’m very keen to see our BigBlueButton test server upgraded. I know this is something on Troy’s to-do so I might just nudge him along :)

It’s been an awesome five days of iMooting - there are still some session I need to catch up with, I’m so glad the sessions were all recorded :)

Now it’s time to stop blogging and get ready for the iMoot Wrapup - I hope my iMoot2012 photo makes it into the competition :)
