When we get information from the web it isn’t raw data it is filtered by the systems we use, the search engine or the social media tool we like. If you are under the impression that you are getting impartial information you need to think again.
Now don’t get me wrong - I am not saying you shouldn’t use searches or social media platforms, what I am saying is it is good to be aware of what happens when you search for something. Your search engine gives you results based in part on what it thinks you want, not impartial at all, helpful most of the time but still filtered (and not by you).
Check out this excellent TED talk by Eli Pariser: Beware online "filter bubbles" and get a better picture of what happens when you look for information. This is really worth the 9 minutes it takes to watch.
